a grounded approach to the heavenly ecosystem

How Accurate Is AstroCartography?

The short answer?

It can provide remarkable accuracy.

But probably not for the reasons you have been told.

If you have spent any time researching AstroCartography online, you have probably seen claims like these:

“Move to your Jupiter line for success.”

“Live on your Venus line to find love.”

“Avoid your Saturn line at all costs.”

But sometimes those descriptions seem to fit.

Then people naturally ask, “Does AstroCartography actually work?”

But I think that is the wrong question.

A better question is: how much of the map are we actually reading?

Because an AstroCartography map is a lot like a birth chart. Actually, it’s literally a projection of your birth chart onto a world map. So, pretty complicated. Thanks, Jim Lewis and the gang!

If you reduce a birth chart to a single planet, you will miss almost everything that makes it meaningful. The same is true of AstroCartography.

Why People Think AstroCartography Isn't Accurate

Most people experience AstroCartography for the first time through a free online map. They enter their birth information. A colorful map appears. They find the city they are interested in. Then they click a line and read a short paragraph explaining what it means.

That might prove useful as an introduction. But it’s also the road where many people become confused or disenchanted.

Perhaps the description does not match their experience. Maybe they lived directly on a Venus line and did not fall in love. Maybe they visited a Jupiter location and nothing extraordinary happened. So they conclude the criss-crossing lines on the map are more like a web of lies.

I think what is happening is they are using a simplistic form of a complex tool to answer a deep and complicated question.

What a Free Map Actually Gives You

Over the last ten years, I have completed roughly a thousand AstroCartography readings for clients around the world. I have traveled extensively across North America and Europe, exploring my own lines and relocated charts. I have delivered talks on the subject for the Astrological Society of Kentucky.

I say that not to impress you, but to establish this: I have seen enough maps and charts to know what the free versions, and many people who call themselves AstroCartographers, are missing. I hear it myself from client after client.

Free maps and superficial practitioners give you a handful of lines. They miss the asteroids. They miss the subtle aspects. They miss the midpoint structures that can have a massive impact on your experience in a place. And they don’t have the slightest clue about the unique spirit DNA that is your birth chart.

In my practice, I work with over 1,300 lines.

In my research process, I conduct a deep analysis on the complex ecosystem of energies that comprises your birth chart.

So when someone tells me AstroCartography did not work for them, my first question is: which version of the tool did you wield?

The child’s mallet, or the master key?

The child’s mallet is cute. It makes a lot of noise and attracts attention. But when there are real tasks to complete, it functions as a distraction at best.

The master key, what I call Spacetime Coding, opens the door to the makeup of organic reality.

The Map Itself Is Not Your Reading

This might be the most important idea on this page.

The map itself is not the main course of the reading. It’s more like the plate on which the meal is served.

The planetary lines are real. The angular relationships are real. But they exist within the larger structure of your birth chart. They are a computed projection of your chart onto a world map, aimed at answering the question:

What would my chart look like if I was born (somewhere else) at the exact same moment?

Without understanding the birth chart itself, it is easy to overemphasize one line while overlooking the symbolic patterns that are actually driving your experience.

That is why I never begin a session with a first-time client by looking at the map. I begin by grounding us into the natal chart.

What are the strongest planets? What sacred geometric patterns vibrate throughout the chart? Which midpoint structures reveal the client’s deepest circuitry? What psychological currents seem to have shaped this person’s life from the beginning?

Only when we are equipped with this knowledge is it appropriate to approach the geographical questions.

Your Birth Chart Doesn't Disappear When You Move

One of the biggest misconceptions about AstroCartography is the idea that moving somewhere gives you an entirely new life.

Of course not, you’re saying. We do not become a different person because you crossed a state line or boarded an international flight. Your birth chart remains your birth chart. Like the old saying says, “Everywhere you go, there you are.”

What does change is which parts of your chart, and your being, step into emphasis.

Consider your chart as an orchestra. Every instrument is already present. A listener’s physical position does not change the symphony that is being performed. It just changes the volume.

A location may amplify your ambition. Another may draw attention toward old relationship patterns. Another may require you to excavate your inner life, or undertake a deep study.

The life you find out there is still yours, but the acoustics change.

This is one of the reasons two people can live in the same city and have completely different experiences. They are not bringing the same chart with them, so each person has a different synastry with that city.

Accuracy Comes From Context

One of the things I learned quickly in relocation work is that I cannot understand a place simply by naming its nearest planetary line.

Instead, I am asking questions like these:

What themes already pulse through this person’s birth chart?

Where on Earth is this extremely significant degree on an angle?

What midpoint structures should be emphasized? Hidden? Or put into a flow?

How do the relocated angles reshape the chart?

For each location, what timing factors are active right now and in the near future?

How has this person experienced places with similar energy in the past?

Every one of those questions adds context. And context improves accuracy.

This is true in every branch of astrology. No experienced astrologer with a shred of integrity interprets a birth chart by reading one planet in isolation. Likewise, no experienced AstroCartographer should rely on a single line while ignoring the rest of the symbolic system.

One of the First Things I Ask Clients

When someone books an AstroCartography reading with me, I usually do not begin our location dialogue by discussing where they want to move. Instead, I am curious about where they live now, or where they have lived in the past.

Their hometown. College. A memorable trip. The city where life suddenly opened up. The place that never quite felt right.

Then I cross-check those experiences with the chart.

I am not trying to force the symbolism to fit. I am trying to see real-life examples of the planets in action.

Again and again, patterns emerge.

A period of unexpected professional growth. Years that revolved around family. A city that encouraged independence. A place where everything seemed to move more slowly than expected, in fits and starts.

These experiences become reference points. Instead of guessing what the map might mean, we are testing it against a life that has already been lived.

This simple moment often eliminates any doubt of whether or not AstroCartography is accurate. Not because I have convinced them. Because they have begun recognizing the symbolism for themselves.

A Client Story

A client came to me feeling like she had done everything “right.” She had followed the practical, sensible path. She was in graduate school, pursuing a career in higher education policy. She had moved to Pennsylvania because it was the logical choice for her program.

But her spirit was dampened, her mojo weighted down.

She described it as feeling like she had been “doing the right thing” her whole life, but it was not leading to fulfillment. She wanted more creativity. More partnership. More raw, organic life.

When we looked at her birth chart, we found a strong Saturn pattern. Saturn is the planet of the long-term. It prizes duty, discipline, and self-perpetuating systems. It is not flashy and it has no concern for your immediate gratification.

In Pennsylvania, that Saturn energy was emphasized. It was a place where she could achieve a lot through hard work and sacrifice. But it was also a place where she felt under-recognized and unfulfilled. Her words, not mine.

We looked at other places. The Pacific Northwest kept coming up. Seattle, Portland, the surrounding areas. Those places had a completely different set of lines. More Venus. More Jupiter. More Chiron, which is associated with healing and teaching. There was a sense that she would be well-received, that her work would be recognized, and that she could finally step into a more creative, connected version of herself.

She was still in Pennsylvania with three semesters of school life to go when we spoke. But she had a plan now. A destination. Something to work toward.

That is what accuracy looks like in practice. It is not predicting the future. It is recognizing the patterns that are already there and using them to make a clearer, more confident choice.

What About Timing?

Accuracy is not just about place. It is also about time. If you ask this astrologer, the two are inseparable. The map shows you the energetic landscape of your birth moment. But the landscape shifts. Planets continue moving after your birth. They aspect your chart in predictable, overlapping cycles. We call them transits.

Sometimes a location that would normally be neutral or even challenging carries a supportive energy for a short window of time. Other times, a place that was once supportive enters a phase of heightened instability.

I always look at timing in a reading. It adds another layer of context. And context improves accuracy.

This is where the “horoscope with a microscope” comes in. We can locate your strongest traits and behavior patterns to the degree. We can name the dates in the past and future when those patterns are going to be triggered.

Likewise, if you are considering New York, and you Midheaven degree there is 7 Aquarius, we will speak about the long window of time in which Pluto is transiting that degree, which would deeply color your potential time in the Big Apple.

This level of precision is what separates a real reading with a top-flight practitioner from a surface-level interpretation by an AstroCartographer who doesn’t actually know the power of astrology.

If you’re looking indications that someone isn’t the real deal, pay attention to how much they talk about Zodiac signs and houses. If that’s their language, then trusting them with your potential life-altering relocation would be like going into surgery with a surgeon who just got their GED.

There Are No "Magic" Locations

One reason people sometimes believe AstroCartography has failed is because they are searching for the perfect place to initiate their ideal life.

The city where every problem disappears. The line where life becomes effortless.

I hate to be the Saturn in the room, but I do not think those places exist.

Every location asks something different of you. Some encourage discipline. Some encourage creativity. Some emphasize your relationship patterns. Others ask you to become more independent.

And none of them eliminate the work of being human.

The purpose of AstroCartography is not to find paradise. It is to understand the changing conversation between your birth moment and the planet to which you were born.

That is a much more realistic expectation. And in my experience, it is the only honest one.

So... How Accurate Is AstroCartography?

When practiced thoughtfully, I believe AstroCartography can provide extraordinary insight into why different places feel so distinct, why certain chapters of life unfold where they do, and why some locations seem to shine on parts of us that might be shaded elsewhere.

But accuracy does not come from memorizing planetary keywords. It comes from understanding the whole symbolic system.

The map. The birth chart. The angles. Relocation paired with timing. Lived experience.

In synthesis, they tell a much richer story than any colorful line ever could.

What a Reading with Me Offers

If you are curious about what your map actually says, I invite you to explore further (article). I do not just read a handful of lines. I work with over 1,300 of them, including asteroids, subtle aspects, and midpoint structures that free maps miss entirely. I spend hours compiling notes on your chart before we ever speak. I analyze your birth chart in depth to understand the patterns that have shaped your life. I look at relocated charts, not just the map. I layer timing on top of location.

Most importantly, I do not treat you like a mass-produced product. I have had many clients tell me, “Phil, I have never felt this truly seen before.”

It isn’t really me they are thanking. It’s astrology. I just have developed a certain fluency with it.
