Why Some Places Feel Like Fate
People often come to me on the verge of certain where they’re going, and where they belong.
They have spent months thinking about a particular city. Sometimes years. They have visited once and never stopped thinking about it. Other times they have never been there at all, yet they feel a pull that borders on obsession. They tell me the place feels like home before they have even unpacked a suitcase.
One of the biggest misconceptions in AstroCartography and relocation strategy is that if you feel strongly drawn to a place, then that place must be good for you.
After a decade of studying charts and maps together, I would like to dispel the notion that those two things are synonymous.
I think what many people experience is something different.
To me, it’s metaphysical magnetism. And I’m here to make the case for it.
Magnetism and the Symbolic Relationship
A magnet has no mind, no opinion. It has no morality. The magnet and the refrigerator door consist of no protagonist or rival. They simply obey the relationship that exists between them.
Geography often behaves in much the same way. Certain places seem to resonate with particular patterns already present within us. They do not create those structures, but they help reveal them. They embolden them. They place them at center stage.
And for you, or in my case, the client, that does not qualify the place as good or bad.
It merely indicates a potent and powerful relationship between that person and that place.
When people first discover AstroCartography, they are often surprised by how many lines cover the globe. They begin searching for the perfect city. But in my practice, that is not what I see at all. Most places are fairly neutral. Some are gently supportive. A few contain significant red flags. Then, every so often, we encounter what I would consider a magnetic place.
To be clear, a magnetic place does not necessarily promise happiness.
It promises attraction, and a certain emphasis.
For example, one planetary pattern in your birth chart suddenly becomes much louder than the others.
If that structure represents one of your greatest gifts, the experience can feel exhilarating. If it represents a wound that has quietly waited beneath the surface for years, the experience can be equally profound, but in an entirely different way.
A Client Story: Magnetism and Illness
One client’s story showed me this in a very demonstrable way.
She had moved from Colorado to Marseilles, France. Shortly after arriving, she developed severe rheumatoid arthritis. The pain was sharp, inflammatory, and relentless. A year later, she returned to Colorado, where the symptoms gradually began to improve. Later she went back to France where she had started a relationship, and the illness flared once again. When she finally decided she was leaving France for good, something remarkable happened. Before she had even boarded the plane, her symptoms began to soften. Returning to Colorado brought further relief.
So, could all of that have been coincidence?
Of course.
But when I examined her chart, the symbolism was difficult to ignore.
She had a powerful Mars-Uranus conjunction opposing Chiron: a pattern capable of expressing extraordinary courage, fierce independence, immediate action, and the need to break free from limitations. It also carried another face. Mars and Uranus can erupt suddenly. Chiron often describes the wound that changes the course of a life, not because it disappears, but because it teaches us how to approach healing.
The relocated chart for Marseilles placed this entire structure directly onto the Midheaven and Root of the chart, dramatically increasing its emphasis. At the same time, she was moving through transits that suggested a period of contraction and profound transformation. Would the condition have remained dormant without the move? Who’s to say? I suspect the arthritis would have emerged somewhere, sometime in her life regardless.
What fascinated me was not that the condition appeared.
It was how faithfully its expression seemed to follow geography.
The place did not create the pattern, but it did amplify it.
When she went to France, the pattern was illuminated. When she returned to Colorado, it receded. The connection was clear enough for us to work from its validity and give counsel from that validated perspective.
Why Are We Attracted to These Places?
So what creates a metaphysical magnetism between and person and a place?
Often, as with transits and going to places that feature the transiting planet strongly, it seems to be time expressing itself through place. We live in an unprecedented condition, in which travel is extremely easy. The ability to roam freely, as long as one has the necessary means, is brand new to the general populace. That places this whole issue of human-place magnetism in the beta stage. We are still figuring it out.
I notice through my work that people are generally drawn to places that are really good for them. I notice that their intuition is often correct, although it does not give them the amount of detail that AstroCartography can.
Everyone has one or more extremely loud patterns in their chart that are expressed rather constantly in their life. Subconsciously, they seem to feel magnetism to a place that emphasizes those patterns, even if they do not need emphasis. In the client’s case, the Mars-Uranus-Chiron pattern was absolutely principle, but also potentially difficult. If she wanted to use that pattern in a place, I would have looked for areas where that opposition was put into a trine/sextile pattern, or a novile pattern, to soften and put the planets into a flow rather than spotlighting them at center stage.
When I am looking at a number of places for a person, I might encounter, out of five places, three that are suitable in a moderate sense. The client doesn’t have energy there that is going to hurt their experience, or push it firmly in one way or another. Most places are fairly neutral for people, but with subtle differences that we can adjust to. In the five places example, three are suitable, one perhaps has a red flag energy or two, and the final might have a heightened magnetism.
One way this happens is when the relocated chart is a sort of mirror for the client’s birth chart, indicating a similar flow of life in that location as the one they were born into.
Alternatively, the magnetic place might put a very strong pattern into emphasis. So, if you have a Jupiter-Saturn-Neptune pattern that is strong in your chart and already has a powerful influence on your life, and maybe it is even your career and you are a minister or spiritual leader or teacher of some sort, you might be magnetized to some place that puts that pattern in an angular position, highlighting at least one planet on an angle. Perhaps you visit and you feel your powers are even stronger there. And then you seriously consider moving there and reach out to me to talk about it, totally unaware of the existing magnetism and what drew you in.
The chart guides you like a rafter on a river, inviting you to that particular channel that puts the pattern in the rapids: a very exciting and invigorating path. In navigating toward and through that channel, however, you are bound to miss out on the greater river that is your life. The big pattern becomes so emphasized that everything in your story expresses itself through that pattern, and much variety of experience is left behind un-lived, unwitnessed.
Magnetism vs. Fate: A Nuanced Distinction
Magnetism could well be fate. Sometimes I see it and I am not sure the client can circumvent the power of the magnetism. Especially when the lines are reinforced by transit in real time, I have trouble thinking the client would relocate anywhere other than the magnetic region.
In other cases where the magnetism is clearly just a magnet and not really in the client’s favor, I will say so. In those cases I think it is just that pure positive-negative charge magnetism, devoid of moral quality but existing nonetheless.
Think of it like: you had heartache for an ex partner, and you met someone who reminded you of him or her so much. You would feel that familiarity and part of you may want to pursue that person. It would be very confusing for the heart. But the likely case is that you were just being pulled by a familiar energy, a magnetism that has attracted you and been prominent for you in the past. There is no actual spark of love. Just a basic instinct, or an old wound flaring up.
Gifts Can Be Amplified, Too
If places amplify wounds, can they amplify gifts just as powerfully?
Well, absolutely.
I gave you an example earlier of the person with a Jupiter-Saturn-Neptune structure. That came from my client work as well. The place highlighted a very strong pattern that was already prominent and had led to a lot of success for the client. He was drawn to experience it further, as he wanted to expand it even more, past whatever limitations he felt in the quite supportive place he was already living.
The chart guides us, but it does not dictate. One primary goal of AstroCartography is to understand your powerful places so you can choose with clarity and confidence.
The question, then, is not whether a place’s magnetism indicates fate.
The better question is this:
What part of you is it magnetizing?
