Moving Is Rarely an Individual Decision

Moving is rarely an individual decision.

Even if the decision begins with one person, all their loved ones live with the consequences. In a couple, one partner may hit their stride while the other struggles to find their footing. In a family, children let go of old friends and try to make new ones. Grandparents grow older. Someone starts a business. Someone else quietly wonders why they never quite feel at home.

When we approach the relocation decision, we have to understand that these are not separate stories.

They are the same story unfolding through different people. Like many a good novel: one plot, and a cast of characters.

When people ask me whether a place is “good,” I always wonder what the sub-question is. Good for what? Good for whom?

Sometimes the map tells me that one partner could build an extraordinary career in a city while the other struggles to settle into daily life. Or one person finally feels like themselves while the other feels strangely untethered. Sometimes no one’s preferred place is perfect, but there is a third place that neither they hadn’t considered until we started looking together.

The Forecast Changes When There Is More Than One Person

Most AstroCartography readings begin with a single birth chart.

Couples’ readings begin with two.

And families might involve three, four, or more.

I do not combine charts together into a single composite, and I do not try to declare one person’s map more important than another’s. Instead, I move back and forth between them, with an eye for each character’s story. And again, like many a good novel, it’s rarely what you expect, and never simple.

A place that supports one person’s vocation might be exhausting for another’s nervous system.

A location that gives one partner stability might feel unbearably predictable to the other.

A child may feel completely at home somewhere neither parent would have chosen for themselves.

This is often the way it goes. We are all navigating different relationships with the same place. And over time, certain patterns inevitably reveal themselves.

A Client Story: The Couple Who Thought They Wanted to Leave

A family of three came to me convinced they needed to leave Florida.

They had been in St. Petersburg for years, and they were ready for a change. They dreamed of the Pacific Northwest: mountains, moss, rain, and a community that felt more aligned with their values. They had already begun imagining their life there. But when I researched their charts, something surprising emerged.

For one partner, St. Petersburg was deeply magnetic, karmic even. Saturn was heavily emphasized (though in a soft way), creating a powerful gravity that made leaving genuinely difficult. The place had a hold on them that went beyond preference or convenience. For the other partner, the same location was fairly neutral, with opportunities for growth and refinement.

As we explored other places, the Pacific Northwest had its own appeal. But it also came with its own set of challenges. Uranus was prominent there, which meant instability and unpredictability. It was a place for adventure, not necessarily for roots. Not what they had envisioned for their son.

The couple was torn. In the moment, I could see them grappling with the news.

I did not tell them what to do.

But I told them that sometimes the place you are looking for is closer than you think. The map can help you see that. It can show you why you are planted where you’re planted, and what might be worth staying for.

Six months later, I got an unprompted check-in from them. Their attitude had shifted for their homeplace, and each member of the family was expanding and thriving in ways they hadn’t expected. All the things they were looking for in a new location had unveiled themselves right where they stood.

Sometimes the Question Changes

People often come to me asking where they should move. But an hour later, we may be talking about something entirely different.

The truth is, there are many considerations underlying the initial question. As a relocation strategist, I am interested to know what’s going on.

Perhaps the real question is whether they want the kind of career they have been pursuing.

Perhaps the dream property with horses is not actually about horses.

Perhaps one partner keeps searching for a forever home while the map quietly suggests a season of movement instead.

Perhaps they already know the answer and are looking for permission to trust it. Really, that’s almost always there.

The map is very fun to explore, and it has a way of illuminating and guiding the conversation, but I have learned not to rush that process.

More Than Finding the Best Line

People often enter a session searching for semblance of certainty. They want to know the place where every line is perfect.

For couples and families, I always begin with the caveat that those places are very rare.

What I do find are places where certain parts of life become easier to cultivate.

Relationships. Purpose. Study. Creativity. Home. Adventure. Healing. Community.

Our goal is not finding perfection.

Instead we are pursuing the right story, the one that keep you living your truths together.

What Happens During a Couples or Family AstroCartography Reading?

These have a distinct flow for each couple or family. But I always begin with the birth charts.

From there we explore the places already woven into your lives, where you have lived, where you have traveled, where you have always felt strangely drawn, and the places you have struggled to explain.

We will compare maps, follow recurring themes, and look at how different locations support different members of the family.

In the process, we might discover surprising areas of agreement. Or we might find pattern and language for tensions that have quietly existed for years.

Sometimes a place that never seemed important suddenly becomes the obvious candidate.

By the end of the session, my hope is not that I have chosen your next home.

It is that you understand the place/person energetics of your lives more deeply than when we began.

My Home

Clients always ask if we found our farm in Appalachian Kentucky with the use of AstroCartography. The answer is layered, more like a book than a Q&A.

But in short, while we used AstroCartography to rule out certain places, our home in Kentucky seemed to magnetically pull us in. When we visited the area, it simply felt right. And as it turns out, the AstroCartography lines here are pretty great, too.

If you’d like to learn more of the personal stuff, you can head over to my About page.

I first learned about AstroCartography at a talk in Virginia, and quickly dropped everything and immersed myself in the study. It wasn’t long before I had traveled the bulk of North America and Europe, exploring my own energy lines and relocated charts. I found home years later with a trunk-load of unexpected lessons, and a much more intimate knowledge of the technique. Soon after, I delivered a talk on the subject for the Astrological Society of Kentucky (a delightful and brilliant group of astrologers).

My Guiding Principles:

After years of practice, a few principles have quietly emerged. They aren’t rules. They’re observations that have continued to cement themselves over hundreds of readings.

The birth chart comes before the map.

AstroCartography is not separate from astrology. The map derives its meaning from the chart, not the other way around.

Every relocation is a trade-off.

I don’t believe there’s a perfect place waiting somewhere on Earth. Every move amplifies certain parts of life while asking something in return. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s understanding the exchange.

Place is relationship.

Sometimes we experience a place directly by living there. Sometimes we experience its symbolic qualities through the people, cultures, communities, or relationships that enter our lives. Geography is only one expression of place.

A reading is something we create together.

The richest insights almost always emerge through conversation. As you tell your stories, I’m continually recognizing patterns, asking new questions, and refining my understanding of how your symbolic language expresses itself.

My responsibility is advocacy, not certainty.

Moving is a huge decision. It affect careers, families, partnerships, chapters and even whole arcs of life. My responsibility isn’t to tell you what to do. It’s to help you see your options clearly enough that your own wisdom can meet them.
